HRADEC KRALOVE, Czech Republic -- The United States blew a two-goal lead in the third period but remained unbeaten at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships with a 2-2 tie with Sweden on Thursday.
Christopher Higgins scored from close range on a pass from R.J. Umberger on a power play at 4:02 of the second period to put the Americans in front, and Chad Larose scored a short-handed goal on a breakaway at 5:20 for a 2-0 U.S. lead.
Sweden rallied in the third with Johan Ejdepalm scoring at 2:27 and Daniel Widing scoring the equalizer on a power play from a goal-mouth scramble with 2:03 left to play.
The United States now has a win and a tie from two games and next plays Belarus on Saturday.
In other matches Thursday, Brad Boyes scored twice as Canada beat Switzerland 6-1; Slovakia upset the defending champions from the Czech Republic 1-0; and Finland beat Russia 2-1. After beating France 15-1, Canada has outscored its two opponents 21-2. |
