Lone error costs Smith chance at perfect game

Associated Press

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan -- Michele Smith pitched a no-hitter as the United States beat Russia 14-0 at the Softball World Championship on Monday.

It was the third no-hitter of Smith's world championship career. Smith, who struck out four, almost had a perfect game, but a fielding error at the start of the fifth inning gave Russia its only baserunner.

The Americans are 4-0 in the tournament with four shutouts. They scored five runs in the third inning and six more in fourth. Russia fell to 1-3.

"This team is staying focused and getting the job done. We have to continue to get better every game,'' U.S. head coach Mike Candrea said.
