MUNICH, Germany -- Olympic and world champion Konstantinos Kenteris of Greece ran the fastest 200 meters in the world this year, finishing in 19.86 seconds at the European Athletics Championships on Friday.

Kenteris was .13 seconds off the European record of 19.72, set by Italy's Pietro Mennea of in Mexico in 1979. He broke the championship record of 20.11, set by Britain's John Regis 12 years ago.

"It looks like I'm now the winner of the Grand Slam of 200-meter sprinting, being the Olympic, world and European champion,'' Kenteris said. "Of course, it's hard to say now but I think I have a shot at breaking Pietro Mennea's European record, being the fastest European at sea level.

"I know how we will celebrate this title. Let me say, I ran a divine bend.''

France's Stephane Diagana won the 400 hurdles in 47.58 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year.

European indoor champion Muriel Hurtis of France won the women's 200 meters in 22.43, the fastest European time this season. Belgium's Kim Gaevert was second in 22.53.

In the women's pole vault, Svetlana Feofanova led a Russian 1-2, soaring 15 feet, 1 inch. Yelena Isinbayeva was second with a leap of 14-11.

Spain's Glory Alozie won the women's 100 hurdles in 12.73, beating Ukraine's Olena Krasovska by .15.
