DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Michelle Kwan has a new coach and another title.
The four-time world champion won the women's competition Saturday night in the Campbell's International Figure Skating Classic, her first event with coach Scott Williams.
''I was pretty happy,'' Kwan said. ''I just had to remember to stay focused and concentrate on one thing at a time. It's not easy only having two weeks to prepare for a competition.''
Defending Olympic champion Alexei Yagudin took the men's title.
Williams became Kwan's coach last month, and the pair started working on Kwan's new long program two weeks ago.
''It's exciting,'' Williams said. ''It was a strong performance.''
Kwan has not ruled out competing at nationals later this season.
''I feel really good right now,'' Kwan said. ''If I keep up this schedule, and the hard work and dedication, I'll be at nationals.''
Ann Patrice McDonough, the 2002 world junior champion, was second.
''I'm so excited,'' McDonough said. ''I'm very surprised. I made one mistake, but it wasn't a major one.''
Olympic champion Sarah Hughes was third.
''I wasn't even looking at placing coming in,'' Hughes said. ''It was important to be here with a new program. I usually don't compete until much later (in the season).''
Yagudin overcame a fall on his first element to beat fellow Russian and 2002 Olympic sliver medalist Evgeny Plushenko, who has been slowed by an ankle injury.
American Michael Weiss was third.
Tim Goebel, the bronze medalist in the Olympics, missed several landings and wound up last in the six-man field. He has a right hip strain, which will be examined by a doctor in the next few days.
''Hopefully it's nothing serious,'' Goebel said. ''It has limited my training a little bit.'' |
