NEW YORK -- A man collapsed during a half-marathon in Staten Island on Sunday and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police say the man, whose name and age was not released, collapsed less than halfway through the 13.1-mile Pontiac half-marathon.

The man was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

More than 2000 people participated in the race, which was sponsored by the New York Road Runners.
