SERRE CHEVALIER, France -- Germany's Xaver Hoffmann moved to the top of the men's Halfpipe World Cup standings Friday after narrowly fending off the challenge of home favorite Gary Zebrowski.
Hoffmann clinched the victory under the floodlights after posting a best score of 39.5 points over his two runs.
But Zebrowski, cheered on by the home crowd, pushed him all the way, finishing with a best of 39.4.
Crispin Lipscomb of Canada finished third at 37.4.
The victory moved Hoffmann past Sweden's Magnus Sterner, who did not take part in the final, at the top of the halfpipe points standings after seven rounds.
Hoffmann collected 1,000 points for the victory to move to 4,860, with Sterner at 4,400. Domu Narita of Japan is third with 2,560 points. He also did not race in the finals.
In the women's event, France once again had to settle for second place, when Sophie Rodriguez finished behind Austria's Nicola Pederzolli.
Pederzolli scored a best of 35.8, comfortably ahead of Rodriguez's 34.4 and Poland's Paulina Ligocka, who scored 33.1.
In the women's overall halfpipe standings, Switzerland's Manuela Lara Pesko leads with 3,650 points, and Japan's Soko Yamaoka is second with 2,870, but neither participated in the finals Friday.
Britain's Lesley McKenna, who finished sixth with a best of 29.0, moved up to third overall with 2,430. |
