PLANICA, Slovenia -- Finland's Matti Hautamaeki set a ski jumping world record Thursday with a jump of 227.5 meters during qualifying for the season's final World Cup event. His leap came shortly after World Cup leader Adam Malysz tied the previous record of 225 meters. Hautamaeki beat the record set by Austrian Andreas Goldberger three years ago. Malysz, of Poland, is trying for his third straight world title, while Hautamaeki is 10th in World Cup standings. He dominated at the recent Nordic ski championships in Val di Fiemme, Italy, with two gold medals. He has 1,227 points in World Cup standings, 122 ahead of German Sven Hannawald, with only two events remaining at this weekend's final World Cup jumps at Planica. |
