USA Hockey adds Mottau, Corvo to roster

Associated Press

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios withdrew from the U.S. team that will play in world hockey championships, USA Hockey announced Monday.

Chelios, who was added to the roster Saturday, cited family commitments and other personal reasons.

A 10-time All-Star and three-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL's top defenseman, Chelios was the assistant captain of the U.S. team that finished second at the Salt Lake City Olympics.

USA Hockey also on Monday added two defensemen, Joe Corvo and Mike Mottau, to the preliminary roster. Corvo was recently assigned to Manchester of the AHL by the Los Angeles Kings. He was a member of the 1997 U.S. National Junior Team.

Mottau was assigned to Saint John of the AHL by the Calgary Flames in February. Mottau was the 2000 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner as hockey's top collegiate player, and played for the U.S. at the 2000 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship.

The remaining three team members will be named later this week to complete the 23-player roster.

The U.S. team plays an exhibition game against Finland on April 23 before the IIHF tournament begins April 26.
