THESSALONIKI, Greece -- The United States routed Puerto Rico 106-72 Monday behind De Angelo Alexander's 23 points to remain unbeaten at the World Junior Basketball Championships. The Oklahoma forward helped the U.S. team move to 4-0 in the under-19 tournament. Puerto Rican guard Jose Barea had 35 points. In other games, Greek power forward Sofoklis Schortsanitis, selected by the Los Angeles Clippers as a second-round pick in last month's NBA draft, scored 28 points in his team's 81-52 win over Slovenia. Greece is also unbeaten in the tournament. Linas Lkleiza scored 30 points to lead Lithuania over Australia 96-87, and Turkey's Engin Astor scored 41 points to help defeat Croatia 87-78. The top eight teams compete to determine places for the finals, which begin Friday. In the bottom-eight group, China beat Angola 87-64; Venezuela defeated South Korea 103-84; Nigeria stopped Iran 78-53; and Argentina routed erstwhile host Malaysia 105-38. The tournament was moved from Malaysia because of fears of severe acute respiratory syndrome. |
