Court wants U.S. documents translated

Associated Press

SOFIA, Bulgaria -- A Bulgarian court delayed an extradition hearing Tuesday for a Korean held on charges related to the Salt Lake City Olympic bribery scandal, after a judge ruled that documents submitted by U.S. officials needed to be translated.

Court officials delayed the case of John Kim, the son of South Korean IOC member Kim Un-yong, until Oct. 10 so that court officials could translate the documents into Korean, said Elisaveta Milanova, the administrative secretary of the Sofia City Court.

The court also rejected Kim's request to be moved from prison to house arrest.

Kim was arrested May 18 at Sofia International Airport on charges of fraud and document forgery. He is accused of lying to FBI investigators and using a fraudulently obtained green card for a "sham" job which a telecommunications executive testified was arranged by Salt Lake's bid leaders.

He was one of three minor players indicted in the tainted bid for the 2002 Winter Olympics. The younger Kim, who was living in New York, fled to South Korea before a U.S. court charged him in September 1999 and never returned.

Kim's lawyers were not immediately available for comment.

The Bulgarian Olympic Committee, which is headed by IOC member Ivan Slavkov, has repeatedly urged Kim's release from custody, invoking his poor health.

Bulgarian police arrested Kim on an Interpol warrant as he arrived from Paris. Slavkov had officially invited him to visit Bulgaria.

He had been scheduled to inspect the rowing channel near the city of Plovdiv. South Korean rowers are considering using the venue as a training base for next year's Athens Olympics.

Kim's father received a "most serious" warning in 1999 after an internal inquiry into the cash, scholarships and other inducements offered to IOC members by Salt Lake City bidders. The scandal forced the expulsion or resignation of 10 IOC members.

The IOC panel said Kim used his influence to help his son get a sham job funded by the Salt Lake City committee. Kim disavowed knowledge of the affair.
