Leone's bat, Stanford's arm lead States

Associated Press

PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Justin Leone hit two home runs and Graham Koonce added another Friday, leading the United States to a 7-0 victory over Nicaragua in the Americas pre-Olympic Baseball Tournament.

Left-hander Jason Stanford allowed two hits over seven innings with Todd Williams and Bryan Bruney completing the shutout.

Team USA scored a run in the first inning without a hit, taking advantage of two errors. Leadoff hitter Mike Rouse walked and moved to second on a bunt. Grady Sizemore reached on an error and Rouse scored when catcher Waylon Abea threw wide on Sizemore's steal of second.

Justin Leone hit a solo homer in the second. In the third, Sizemore walked and scored on Koonce's home run to make it 4-0. Leone hit his second solo homer in the sixth off losing pitcher Olman Rostran.

Joe Mauer drove in the last two runs in the ninth with a double.

"It took us a few innings to get the rust off our bats and get things going, but once we did we played a pretty solid ballgame," said Team USA manager Frank Robinson. "Jason pitched very well, and it was a good way to start the tournament."
