Granato, 13 other gold-medalists return to U.S. team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The U.S. women's Olympics hockey roster for the Salt Lake City Games will feature 14 veterans off the 1998 gold-medal-winning team, USA Hockey revealed Monday when it announced the 20-player squad.

Returning for their second Olympics are: goaltenders Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.l.) and Sarah Tueting (Winnetka, Ill.); defensemen Chris Bailey (Marietta, N.Y.), Karyn Bye (River Falls, Wis.), Sue Merz (Greenwich, Conn.), A.J. Mleczko (Nantucket, Mass.), Tara Mounsey (Concord, N.H.), and Angela Ruggiero (Harper Woods, Mich.); and forwards Laurie Baker (Concord, Mass.), Tricia Dunn (Derry, N.H.), Cammi Granato (Downers Grove, Ill.), Katie King (Salem, N.H.), Shelley Looney (Brownstown Township, Mich.) and Jenny Potter (Eagan, Minn.).

"It is a huge honor for all of the returning Olympians to be named to the team for the second time," Granato said. "Every member of this team has worked hard since August, and we are very proud to be able to represent our country, especially on home ice in Salt Lake City."

Joining the 1998 Olympians are three players who have appeared in International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championships, including forwards Julie Chu (Fairfield, Conn.), Natalie Darwitz (Eagan, Minn.) and Krissy Wendell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.).

Rounding out the squad are three skaters who are making their first appearance on a U.S. Women's National Team on the current touring team: defensemen Courtney Kennedy (Woburn, Mass.) and Lyndsay Wall (Churchville, N.Y.); and forward Andrea Kilbourne (Saranac Lake, N.Y.).

The 20 players were selected from the 2001-02 USA Hockey Women's National Team, which currently competing on The Visa Skate To Salt Lake Tour. The tour schedule includes both national and international games in preparation for the Olympic Winter Games. The U.S. team is 21-0-0 overall, and has 10 games remaining before departing for Salt Lake City.

Forwards Annamarie Holmes (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Carisa Zaban (Glenview, Ill.) were released from the team Monday.
