Sandell reportedly has kidney removed

VIENNA -- Finnish Alpine skier Marcus Sandell had his left kidney removed in a hospital in Innsbruck, Austria, after badly crashing during a training run on the nearby Pitztaler glacier.

According to Finnish news agency STT, the 22-year-old Sandell hurt his kidney, spleen and back and broke his nose and hand Monday after coming off the course and falling.

Doctors at the Innsbruck hospital said Sandell was doing well and likely will make a full recovery, STT reported.

Sandell's best result on last season's World Cup circuit was 10th in a giant slalom in Sestriere, Italy, in February.
