Pan Am bowling gold medalist caught doping

LIMA, Peru -- Puerto Rican bowler Jean Perez Faure's gold in men's doubles bowling was annulled Sunday after he tested positive for chlorthalidone, giving the United States the top medal in the event.

The action gives the gold to Americans Jakob Butturff and Nick Pate. Colombia moves up to the silver and Mexico the bronze.

Chlorthalidone is a diuretic that is classified as a masking agent.

"The procedures used to take and analyze the samples are being carried out according to the Pan American Games anti-doping rules that were approved by the World Anti-Doping Agency," the Pan American Sports Organization said in a statement.

Panam Sports had indicated on Friday that there had only been one case of doping at the Lima Games out of close to 1,200 tests conducted. Dominican baseball player Audrey Joel Perez had tested positive for the anabolic steroid oxandrolone.

Peruvian swimmer Mauricio Fiol, a silver medalist at the 2015 Pan American Games, announced before the opening ceremonies that he would pull out because of a positive test.
