ESPN/ESPN2 broadcast dates announced
 
 Outdoor enthusiasts looking for an exciting and unique vacation this summer now can make their plans -- the ESPN Great Outdoor Games, a first-of-its kind "Olympic style" event for outdoor sports, will take place July 20-23 in Lake Placid, N.Y. More than 200 of the world's best competitors in outdoor sports as varied as bass fishing, chain sawing and retriever trials will vie for nearly $300,000 in prize money. The ESPN Great Outdoor Games, created and organized by ESPN, will encompass 20 events in four sport categories - Fishing, Timber Events, Sporting Dogs and Target Sports.

ESPN/ESPN2 coverage will begin in July and will include a total of 17 hours of original programming starting Thursday, July 27, including primetime telecasts July 27-30 and weekend afternoon coverage July 29-30. In addition, ESPN2 will air one-hour compilation shows the following week, July 31 - August 4 at 11 a.m. ET with an extensive schedule of reairs.

Like the successful ESPN X Games and Winter X Games, the ESPN Great Outdoor Games will bring together world-class competitors in related fields to create compelling programming for participants in these activities and non-participants alike. The ESPN Great Outdoor Games will include 20 events in four sport categories:

Target Sports

  • Archery Targets
  • Rifle Targets
  • Shotgun Grid

    Fishing

  • Bass Fishing
  • One-Fish (largest fish caught; seeding by fly casting round)

    Timber Events

  • Two-Board Jigger (timed event as participants chop into vertical pole, place block into pole and climb)
  • Men's Endurance (cumulative time for three events: Underhand Chop, Standing Chop, Single Buck)
  • Women's Endurance (cumulative time for three events: Underhand Chop, Single Buck, Ax Throw)
  • Super Modified Hot Saw (timed chain sawing)
  • Men's Hard Hit (fewest axe hits to cut through a log)
  • Speed Climbing (head-to-head bracketed event)
  • Team Relay (five events, three-person male/female teams)
  • Tree Topping (climbers ascend pole and saw top off in timed event)
  • Men's/Women's Run, Roll and Drive (cumulative score from three events: Log Rolling, Boom Run and River Drive)

    Sporting Dogs

  • Agility (timed obstacle course, large and small dog divisions)
  • Fly Ball (four-dog team relay race)
  • Big Air (long jump into lake)
  • Retriever Trials

    ESPN/ESPN2 outdoor programming is previewing the ESPN Great Outdoor Games taking place next July in Lake Placid, N.Y. The segments - ESPN Great Outdoor GameBook -- are aired during ESPN's Saturday morning block of outdoors programming (7 - 10 a.m.) and during ESPN2's Sunday morning block (up to four hours, usually beginning at 6 or 9 a.m.). They preview the events, rules, venues and likely competitors. They will continue until the inaugural ESPN Great Outdoor Games next July.
