Elite pro Byron Velvick starts "Going Coastal"

"Going Coastal" airs every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. ET on ESPN2.

Well-known Elite Series pro and television personality Byron Velvick is starting a new venture on the ESPN2 Saltwater Sunday block.

"Going Coastal," hosted by the former "Bachelor" contestant and Bass Center analyst, is an inshore saltwater show that is meant to be both entertaining and educational to the viewers.

"What we are looking for is the best inshore bite and the best local experts," Velvick said. "My role is really as an analyst, to break down the different ways we are fishing each week."

Velvick called himself a "conduit" between the local experts and the audience to really help display why specific patterns are working and really to help the viewers learn to catch more fish.

"Having both experience as a professional angler and as a television analyst, I think I possess a special insight and can see nuances that the average angler might miss," Velvick said. "Hopefully after watching the show, the viewers will then be able to really focus on improving aspects of their inshore fishing ability."

Though now a successful professional angler on the Elite Series, Velvick is, in many ways, returning to his roots with this new show.

"It's a kind of homecoming for me. I feel like I'm back where I started," Velvick said. "The first money I ever made fishing was in saltwater. I was a kid — maybe 13- or 14-years-old — in California working as a Dead Head on the party boats along the coast."

The very first show of the season featured Velvick returning to the area of Southern California that he grew up in and fishing with some of the mentors that helped nurture his love of fishing when he was younger.

"It was nostalgic to fish in the same spots that I used to fish out of an old boat while putting around the oil derricks," Velvick said. "Thinking about it now, that was pretty insane, but at the time it seemed perfectly fine."

The show airs every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. ET and features both familiar haunts and more remote locations, as Velvick plans to film shows in both Panama and Costa Rica.

"The most rewarding part about being on TV is that we get e-mails from viewers all the time and I love to help them catch more fish," Velvick said. "I want to be the guy who does what he does best: breaking down the bite. I look to continue that on this season of "Going Coastal.'"
