Sports movies have a strange, profound effect on the male species. On one hand, they offer an intense form of male bonding. On the other hand, they provide one of the rare instances in which it's OK for a man to cry. Chris McKendry tries to figure out why guys are obsessed with movie quotes, while Eric Neel admits to shedding a few tears.

During the Oscars telecast, the "other awards" are usually reduced to a quick video montage. Page 2 will show no such disrespect. Today, we hand out a handful of trophies for our Sports Movies Week, including Best Villain, Best Sequel, Best Documentary and Lifetime Achievement Award. And it's not too late for you to vote for the winners of Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Moment.

Sign of the Times Makin' It Better
When we look back on this time in baseball, will we say, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times"? Or just the latter? All signs -- especially the ones that portray the feelings of the fans -- point to the latter. Page 2 has collected the signs of fan disgust, and we're asking you to vote for the best.
Serena Williams is the talk of the U.S. Open -- and it's not even about her dominating game. Serena turned heads with her daring black outfit on Monday, and Page 2's "Makin' It Better" wonders if that Lycra number is the best in Serena's closet. Plus, we look at the Penguins' latest new sweaters.

SPORTOON
Anna Kournikova lasted only 40 minutes (and her opponent hit only one measly winner) at the 2002 U.S. Open. But that doesn't mean Monday wasn't a full day for the tennis temptress. Page 2 cartoonist Kurt Snibbe offers an hour-by-hour examination of Anna's "run" at the final Grand Slam event of the year.

We've already asked you to vote for Best Actor and Best Moment, so today we turn our attention to the Best Actress in a sports movie. Check out our top 10, and then vote in the poll to pick the winner.

10]  Julie Christie in "Heaven Can Wait" (1978)
While angels float (metaphorically) throughout the plot, Christie, in her role as English teacher Betty Logan, seems to do so almost literally. As one ESPN.com wag put it, "she's luminescent."
9]  Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in "The Color of Money" (1986)
Mastrantonio was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Carman, the sexy girlfriend of young pool hustler Vincent (Tom Cruise).
8]  Sanaa Lathan in "Love and Basketball" (2000)
Lathan shines in her role as Monica Wright, a tough, tomboyish, stubborn and beautiful player navigating the minefields of, well, love and basketball.
7]  Lindsay Crouse in "Slap Shot"
While the Chiefs were out having fun, our hearts ached for Crouse's Lily, the neglected, lonely and scared hockey wife stuck in Charlestown.
