Just when you think that Steelers' QB Kordell Stewart has settled in to the team's offense, he has a performance like last Sunday's against the Cleveland Browns. Stewart finished the game 15-32 for 137 yards and two interceptions -- the most damaging interception coming as the Steelers were trying to run out the clock for the win. The good news for the Steelers is that they are playing on the road this week. Stewart has led his team to a 4-1 road record with a QB rating of 87.3 in road games.

This week, Stewart will be challenged by a Titan defense that has shown the ability to pressure the passer without forcing its cornerbacks to play on an island, and is one of the more effective units in the league at stopping the run, ranked 12th overall.

For the Steelers to have success running the football, OC Dermonti Dawson (or his back-up Roger Duffy) and FB Jon Witman need to lock up Tennessee MLB Eddie Robinson, who is one of the better run-stopping backers in the league. This will allow Pittsburgh RB Jerome Bettis to take on the Tennessee safeties -- a match-up that Bettis will more often than not win.

Pittsburgh should also look to establish the short to middle range passing game early on with WR's Hines Ward and Courtney Hawkins. Titan CBs Denard Walker and Samari Rolle are young and play a lot of man-to-man coverage, so the short passing game could make them susceptible to pump fakes and deep routes later in the game.

Although Pittsburgh's coaching staff is trying to mold Stewart into a more polished, pocket passer, he is still a big play threat when he tucks the ball away and runs with it. That being said, expect Titan coach Jeff Fisher to put MLB Eddie Robinson into spy mode in passing situations to minimize the damage that Stewart can do. Two weeks ago in San Francisco, the 49ers were unable to get any pressure on Stewart, and he burned the secondary repeatedly as a result.

The Titans need to get in Stewart's face early and often this week, and rookie LDE Jevon Kearse is in a good position to be the guy. Kearse will be matched up against ROT Anthony Brown, who has held up well all season against lesser foes. Kearse has been dominant at times this season, and uses a combination of speed and power to keep opposing tackles off balance. Coach Fisher's 4-6 defense is one that will put a lot of guys on the LOS and challenge Stewart to make plays.

Another area where the Titan defense has an opportunity to control the game is in the interior. The Steelers have been unable to get healthy, with OC Dermonti Dawson and LOG Alan Faneca slowed by injuries. RDT Jason Fisk could have a big day, particularly if Dawson can't go for the fourth straight week.

What's the best remedy for an offense that is coming off its worst outing of the year against Miami? The Cincinnati Bengals' defense of course. The Titans got back to basics against the Bengals, with RB Eddie George carrying the ball 29 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns. QB Steve McNair was unspectacular in his team's win, but did enough to put the Titans in a position to win as he finished the game 12-25 for 103 yards and no touchdowns.

Offensive coordinator Les Steckel has executed a conservative game plan since McNair returned from a neck injury two weeks ago, and eventually needs to start opening things up if the Titans are going to be an effective offensive football team. McNair should look downfield more often this week, as the Steeler corners have been burned on deep passes several times this season.

One of the reasons Tennessee has not been throwing the ball downfield as of late is that teams are beginning to jam the Titan WR's at the line of scrimmage and Yancey Thigpen and Kevin Dyson have had a difficult time getting into their routes. Expect the Titans to try and open up their offense this week to give McNair more options downfield.

The Steeler defense played pretty well against the Browns last week except for one play when Cleveland WR Kevin Johnson got behind the defense for a big play and a touchdown. The unit was solid against the run, and needs to be again this weekend as they will see a lot of Titan RB George. MLB Levon Kirkland needs to be on his game, get off his blocks and make plays against the Tennessee running game, but will have a tough time this week against the Titan interior offensive line. Tennessee's OC Kevin Long and OG's Bruce Matthews and Benji Olson have controlled the middle of the field in recent weeks, allowing RB George to get a lot of yardage between the tackles. Kirkland and NG Joel Steed need to have solid games to force George outside where Steeler LOLB Jason Gildon and ROLB Carlos Emmons can use their lateral quickness to force George to run east / west. It is when George squares his shoulders and starts running north / south that he becomes a truly devastating ball carrier.

The Steelers catch a break this week because Tennessee TE Frank Wychek is playing for the third straight week with a partially torn MCL. Wychek has been an effective weapon in the middle of the field, but with a bad wheel, Kirkland, who plays well in space, should be able to take him out of his game.

Punt return avg. 9 18

Opp. punt return avg. 22 11
Opp. kickoff ret. avg. 11 25
Time of possession 7 16
Tennessee surrendered a 99-yard kickoff return to the Bengals' Tremain Mack and had a kick-off return of its own called back because of a penalty. Both teams' special teams coverage units are about average - but the Steelers have had a tough year returning kicks and rank near the bottom of the league in that category. Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher has been flip-flopping his punt returners each week - if the weather conditions are adverse, he likes to go with veteran Courtney Hawkins, but in good weather he likes to go with rookie Troy Edwards, who is more of a big play threat. Steelers' PK Kris Brown leads the league in % of field goals made, converting 16 of 17 opportunities this season.

Key matchups
  • Tennessee RB Eddie George vs. Pittsburgh ILBs Gildon and Holmes
The Steeler ILB's may be the most physical in the NFL and they must step up and fill versus Eddie George and slow down the Titan run game. If George has a big day running between the tackles, it will cause huge problems for the Steelers.

  • Tennessee DE Jevon Kearse vs. Pittsburgh ROT Anthony Brown
Kearse is almost impossible to single block, as he uses his quickness to get by offensive tackles. Brown is no match for him athletically and he may need some help with either a TE or a back blocking.

  • Pittsburgh RB Jerome Bettis vs. Tennessee MLB Barron Wortham
The Steelers must run the football effectively with Bettis between the tackles, and they will attack Wortham and the Titan defensive front. Wortham must step up and fill at the point of attack and not give Bettis positive yards on first and second downs.

    Pittsburgh will win if...
  • RB Jerome Bettis has a 25-30 carries/100-yard rushing day. Time of possession is critical for the Steelers, as QB Kordell Stewart continues to struggle. A big day by Bettis will not only take pressure off Stewart, but it will also keep Eddie George and the Titan offense on the sidelines.

  • QB Kordell Stewart can exploit single m/m matchups by Titans' secondary. The Titans will put eight in the box to stop Bettis and the Steeler run game, and they will blitz Stewart from every direction. It will leave the Tennessee corners on an island, and if Stewart has time to throw the football and he can find the single coverage matchups, he has a chance to hit on some big plays in the passing game...But that is a big if.

  • Their defensive front-seven can control the tempo of the game. Pittsburgh is very physical up-front, and they must not only stop RB Eddie George and the Titan run game, but they must control QB Steve McNair, who loves to tuck the ball and run up the middle if the passing play is not there. Pittsburgh must not let McNair beat them with his feet.

    Tennessee will win if...

  • The win the battle of time of possession with a big day by RB Eddie George. The Titans would love to grind this one out and wear down the Steeler defense with a very strong run game that controls the clock. Success by Eddie George will force the Steelers to load up versus the run and will give QB Steve McNair a lot of playaction opportunities versus a Steeler secondary that is really banged up, especially at the corner position.

  • Their 46 blitz defense puts pressure on QB Kordell Stewart. Everybody knows that the Titan philosophy is to attack opposing quarterbacks with the blitz and "roll the dice" that defensive pressure can get to the quarterback before he can exploit single coverage matchups in the secondary. This is a defense that should give Stewart fits and force a lot of bad decisions.

  • They stop Steeler RB Jerome Bettis on first and second down. The last thing Pittsburgh needs is to have to throw the football on third down. To have success in this game, they must be in a lot of third and short situations, which will take the ball out of Kordell Stewart's hands and allow them to have offensive balance.

    The War Room edge
These are two football teams with similar personalities, as they both love to run the football, play physical and attacking defense, and win the battles of time of possession and takeaways/giveaways. However, the Titans are much better equipped and more talented. Plus, if the game comes down to the battle of quarterbacks, Steve McNair has a huge advantage over Kordell Stewart. Look for the Titans defense to force Stewart into a lot of mistakes and Steve McNair to have a big day versus a banged up Steeler secondary. The Titans will continue to roll, while the Steelers may still be suffering from a hangover effect of their embarrassing loss to Cleveland a week ago.
