Bull rider Josh Carter breaks neck

Doctors believe PRCA bull rider Josh Carter is lucky to be alive after he was recently thrown from a bull and broke several bones in his neck.

During the final performance in Brookings, S.D., on Oct. 28, Carter was flipped off a bull and landed on his neck. He was rushed to a hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., where doctors discovered he had broken his C1, C2, C3 and C4 vertebrae, an injury that rendered him temporarily paralyzed.

A friend of Carter's, Ardie Maier, said doctors were amazed Carter survived the accident and that he is able to breathe on his own. He has recovered a little feeling in his legs and is also able to move his toes some, so Maier is optimistic Carter will make a strong recovery.

Carter previously broke his neck a few years ago and had several of his upper vertebrae fused at that time.
