Sponsorship a key to possible Sauter-RGM Cup team for '08

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Robby Gordon Motorsports is prepared to add a second Nextel Cup team in 2008, and team owner Robby Gordon said Friday that Johnny Sauter is a candidate, provided he can bring sponsorship.

"We're speaking with Johnny Sauter, who could potentially be available," Gordon said Friday at Martinsville Speedway. "It depends on sponsorship -- either sponsorship he brings or helps me find.

"It's hard to find [sponsorship] unless the sponsor says, 'That's my guy.' "

Gordon said his shop is ready to integrate a second team, and that RGM has nine Cars of Tomorrow completed.

Sauter, who currently drives the No. 70 Chevrolet for Haas/CNC Racing, is uncertain what his future holds. He said Haas/CNC officials haven't told him whether or not he'll have a job in 2008, but he figures it's pertinent for him to be out looking for future employment.

Haas/CNC recently signed Scott Riggs to a contract but didn't specify which car he would drive. Driver Jeff Green told ESPN.com this week that as far as he knew, he was driving the No. 66 in 2008.

Green said he has a contract for 2008 that's an annual renewal, and hadn't yet been picked up for 2009.
