Gators, 'Noles, Vols, Irish, Tide add to top classes




The heavyweights showed their muscle on national signing day as Florida, Florida State, Alabama, Tennessee and Notre Dame added top prospects.

Florida signed defensive back Tre Orr of Lake City-Columbia, Fla.; offensive lineman Max Starks of Orlando-Lake Highland Prep, Fla., over Florida State, Michigan, Georgia, USC and Notre Dame; offensive lineman Jonathan Colon of Miami-Central, Fla.; and receiver Kelvin Kight of Lithonia, Ga.

Florida State signed outstanding defensive lineman Travis Johnson of Sherman Oaks-Notre Dame, Calif.; national-quality offensive lineman Alex Barron of Orangeburg-Wilkinson, S.C., over Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Georgia and South Carolina; running back Greg Jones of Beaufort-Battery Creek, S.C., over Ohio State; defensive back Claudius Osei of Tallahassee, Fla., over Tennessee; defensive back Bryant McFadden of Hollywood-McArthur, Fla.; linebacker Eric Moore of Pahokee, Fla.; and defensive back Yohance Buchanan of Atlanta-Douglass, Ga.

Outstanding defensive lineman Albert Means of Memphis-Trezevant, Tenn.; huge offensive lineman Maurice Mitchell of Albany-Dougherty County, Ga.; and linebacker Brooks Daniels of Jasper-Hamilton County, Fla., will play at Alabama.

Tennessee gained defensive back O.J. Owens of New London-North Stanley, N.C., over Florida State, North Carolina and East Carolina; top receiver Tony Brown of Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas, Fla., over Florida State and Purdue; and running back Shyrone Carey of Marrero-Shaw, La., over Florida State and LSU.

Highly rated quarterback Carlyle Holiday of San Antonio-Roosevelt, Tex., chose Notre Dame over Nebraska. Also signing with the Irish is quarterback Abram Elam of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Oklahoma beat out Oklahoma State, Notre Dame and TCU for linebacker Ronbrose Jones of Bristow, Okla.

LSU edged Nebraska for Adrian Mayes of Houston-Forest Brook, Tex.

Receiver Keary Colbert of Oxnard-Hueneme, Calif., signed with USC over Arizona State and Utah.

Mississippi State has quarterback Chris Giacone of Westfield, N.J., who decommitted from Central Florida.

ACC:
Maryland signed receiver Maurice Shanks of Hampton-Phoebus, Va.

Independents:
Central Florida gained running back Alex Hayes of Orlando-Evans, Fla.

Big Ten:
Minnesota gained defensive lineman Jason Green of Orange, N.J., who decommitted from Rutgers.

Big 12:
Running back Larry Anglin of Compton College, Calif., will play for Iowa State after decommitting from Minnesota.

Offensive lineman Jerod Fields of Bandera, Tex., chose Oklahoma after decommitting from New Mexico.

Kansas regained quarterback Mario Kinsey of Waco-La Vega, Tex., who decommitted from Baylor.

Texas A&M has defensive lineman Marcus Jasmine of New Orleans-De La Salle, La.

Running back Alvin Marshall of Los Angeles-Locke, Calif., chose Nebraska. LSU edged the Huskers for Adrian Mayes of Houston-Forest Brook, Tex.

Missouri has commitments from defensive lineman Attiyah Ellison of Manchester-Parkway South, Mo., and receiver Joseph Bruce of Ft. Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas, Fla.

Big East:
Miami picked up defensive back Carl Walker of Jacksonville-Jackson, Fla., over Missouri and Florida State.

West Virginia added defensive back Yulkeith Brown of Miami-Northwestern, Fla.

Virginia Tech committed defensive lineman Channing Reed of Trenton, N.J./Montgomery College, Md.

Syracuse has defensive back Jerry Mason of Bridgton Academy, Maine; and kicker Collin Barber of Lexington-Catholic, Ky.

Pac-10:
Linebacker Alex Ngaue of West LA JC, Calif.; running back Eddie Linscomb of Mt. SAC, Calif., and receiver Billy Chase of Compton College, Calif., are set for Washington State.

Linebacker Ryan Jackson of San Jose-Valley Christian, Calif., pledged to Oregon.

WAC:
Receiver Mark Tate of San Diego-Hoover, Calif., verballed to Hawaii.
