'Horns, Hawkeyes, 'Noles get key pledges




The early rush of basketball commitments continues, with Texas, Iowa and Florida State collecting Top 100 prospects.

Outstanding point guard T.J. Ford of Sugar Land-Willowridge, Tex., verballed to the Texas Longhorns over Louisville, Cincinnati and Houston.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have a verbal from forward Marcellus Sommerville of Peoria-Central, Ill., over interest from Purdue, Kentucky and Saint Louis.

Forward Anthony Richardson of Raleigh-Leesville Road, N.C., chose Florida State over Maryland, Clemson, Wake Forest and East Carolina.

Forward Tyrone Sally of Richmond-Meadowbrook, Va., has verballed to West Virginia. Sally transferred from Durham-Emmanuel Academy, N.C.

Virginia has a verbal from touted forward Jason Clark of Virginia Beach-Kellam, Va./Hargrave Military Academy, Va., over Tennessee, Wake Forest, Florida State, North Carolina State, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion. Clark joins guards Keith Jenifer and Jermaine Harper as commitments for the Cavaliers.

Guard Michael Lee of Portland-Jefferson, Ore., has verballed to Kansas over Oregon. Prep guard teammate Aaron Miles, a Top 100 prospect, is considering Kansas, Arizona and Oregon.

Top 100 forward Rick Rickert of Duluth-East, Minn., has eliminated Duke and will decide between Arizona or Minnesota.

Top 100 guard Keith Langford of Crowley-North Crowley, Tex., has decommitted from Mississippi. Kansas and Oklahoma are now showing interest.

Rutgers has commitments from guard Ricky Shields of Riverdale-Parkdale, Md./Hargrave MA, Va., over interest in South Florida, George Mason, East Carolina and Syracuse; and forward Jason McCoy of Houston-Milby, Tex., over SMU, Virginia Tech, Houston and Tulane.

Forward Kenny Adeleke of Brooklyn-Robeson, N.Y., picked DePaul over interest in Hofstra, New Mexico, UMass and Boston College.

Top junior college forward Kedrick Brown of Oklaoosa-Walton JC, Fla., has verballed to LSU over interest from Auburn and Mississippi State. Center/forward Shawnson Johnson of Shreveport, La./Lee JC, Tex., confirmed an earlier published commitment to the Tigers.

Memphis has a reported verbal from one of the top junior college prospects in forward/center Chris Massie of Oxnard JC, Calif., over Oklahoma, Texas, Washington and Fresno State.

Guard/forward Jason Holwerda of Chattanooga-Christian, Tenn., pledged to Vanderbilt over Florida. Holwerda, who averaged 23 points, six rebounds and four assists as a junior, also considered Iowa and Tennessee.

Center Chad Bell of Los Angeles-Westchester, Calif., verballed to New Mexico over interest from Memphis and Kentucky.

Guard Carl Krauser of Oakdale-St. Thomas More, Conn., has verballed to Pittsburgh.

Seventy of the Class 2001 Top 100 Men's Basketball Prospects have committed. The UCLA Bruins have commitments from four Top 100 prospects. Programs with verbals from three top prospects include Arizona, Florida, Georgia Tech, Missouri, North Carolina and North Carolina State.

Guard Ronald Howard of Chicago-Whitney Young, Ill., verballed to Marquette over Tulane, Valparaiso and Saint Louis.

Forward Brandon Brigman of Philadelphia-St. John Neuman, Pa., is headed to South Florida. He drew interest from Virginia Tech, Penn State and UMass.

Center/forward Ben Lambert of Okaloosa-Walton CC, Fla., has decommitted from Long Beach State and reportedly verballed to Southern Mississippi. The Golden Eagles also pledged forward Carey Rigsby of Western Oklahoma JC, Okla., over interest from Texas A&M, Colorado State and Oregon.

Texas Tech has a verbal from forward Billy Pharis of Van Buren, Ark./Westark College, Ark.

Guard/forward Floyd North of San Diego-St. Augustine, Calif., has verballed to Oregon State over interest from Georgia, Rutgers and San Diego State.

MAC:
Western Michigan has a verbal from forward Nicola Evola of Schoolcraft College, Mich.

Guard Ronny Dawn of Newport-Central Catholic, Ky., committed to Marshall over offers from Tennessee, Xavier, Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky. Marquette and Iowa State also showed interest.

Missouri Valley:
Evansville pledged forward Eric Ottens of Fulton, Ill.

Indiana State has a verbal from forward/center Jarod Adler of Monroe-Adams Central, Ind., over Southern Illinois and Liberty.

Big East:
Seton Hall has a verbal from guard John Blackgrove of Hillsdale-Pascack, N.J., who chose the Pirates over interest from Fordham, LaSalle, Xavier, Rutgers and others. He will first attend prep school.

Guard Adrian Walton of Milford Academy, Conn./New York-Bronx Regional, N.Y., has verballed to Miami (Fla.).

Villanova has guard Brennan Martin of Mission Viejo-Trabuco Hills, Calif./Hargrave Military Academy, Va. Martin originally committed to Texas A&M with Class 2000.

Atlantic 10:
George Washington has a verbal from forward Tamal Forchion of Philadelphia-Roman Catholic, Pa., over St. Joseph's, LaSalle and St. Bonaventure.

LaSalle has a verbal from center/forward Marcus Gantt of Camden-Woodrow Wilson, N.J.

Center Bruce Brown of Richmond-Henrico, Va., committed to Duquesne.

Northeastern pledged forward/center Sylbrin Robinson and forward Corneluis Wright, both from Miami-Senior, Fla./Odessa JC, Tex.

James Madison gained guard Todd Moret of Fairburn-Landmark Christian, Ga., over Delaware, Eastern Kentucky, Central Florida and St. Bonaventure.
