HOUSTON -- Cornerback Marcus Maxey was anything but happy
Tuesday when Butch Davis left the Miami Hurricanes to become the
Cleveland Browns' head coach.
Maxey, one of the country's top high school football players,
told Houston television station KRIV he had been recruited by Davis
to play for Miami with the assurance the coach would stay with the
Hurricanes.
"He came to my house and told my parents that he was a
Hurricane," Maxey said. "So when I heard (he was going to the
Browns) I thought it was a mistake somebody had made. It was just
deceiving how he came and lied like that to us."
Davis had interviewed for the head coaching job with the NFL
expansion Houston Texans. But up until recently he had said he was
staying in Miami, where he was close to signing a five-year
contract extension.
On Tuesday, after weeks of pursuit capped by a whirlwind weekend
of activity and negotiations, the Browns announced Davis as their
coach.
Maxey said several other schools, including Oklahoma, Notre
Dame, Texas and Texas Tech, have called to gauge his interest now
that Davis has gone to Cleveland.
Maxey said he might visit another school or two before national
signing day next Wednesday. Even though he still wants to play for
Miami, Maxey said he doesn't know if he can trust the program now.
"If I go down there now, whose word am I supposed to trust then
if all of the other coaches say they are not leaving either," he
said.
