One of the nation's top prep standouts, forward Ousmane Cisse of Montgomery-St. Jude, Ala., has chosen to enter
the NBA draft.
Cisse considered Louisville, Miami, Arkansas, Michigan, Memphis, North Carolina, Duke, Virginia and Indiana. He averaged 29 points, 16 rebounds and 13 blocks this past season, earning McDonald's All American honors. Cisse becomes the third high school player to declare for the June 27 draft. Center Eddy Curry of South Holland-Thornwood, Ill., earlier announced that he would opt for the NBA rather than enroll at DePaul. Curry was named Mr. Basketball of Illinois after averaging 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks as a senior and earned MVP honors in the McDonald's All American Game. Tyson Chandler, a 7-1 center/forward from Compton-Dominguez, Cal., averaged 26 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocked shots for the Dons (31-4) but missed the final two games, including their state championship victory, because of an ankle injury. Other preps who may bypass college for the draft include Sagana Diop, a 7-0 center from Senegal/Oak Hill Academy, Va.; 6-11 forward Kwame Brown of Glynn Academy, Ga., who signed with Florida; and guard Dajuan Wagner of Camden, N.J., who signed with Memphis. They have until May 13 to make their decisions. Top 100 forward Brandon Bender of Louisville-Ballard, Ky., has signed with the Louisville Cardinals over Charlotte. Bender, who averaged 18.3 points and 10.9 rebounds as a senior, also considered West Virginia, Seton Hall and Alabama, among others. The 6-9 Bender became new coach Rick Pitino's second signee of the spring, joining guard/forward Larry O'Bannon of Louisville-Male, Ky., who drew interest from Dayton, Kentucky, Colorado, Tennessee, Maryland and Murray State. Center/forward Emeka Okafor of Houston-Bellaire, Tex., is headed for UConn over Arkansas and Vanderbilt. He also considered Texas Tech, Rice, Georgia Tech, Stanford and North Carolina. The Spring Signing Period runs April 11 to May 15. Forward Carlton Baker of East Chicago, Ind./Barton County CC, Kan., signed with San Jose State. Junior forward Danny Miller Mt. Holly, N.J., is transferring from Maryland. Miller, who is considering Notre Dame, averaged 4.8 points and 2.6 rebounds last season. Louisiana-Monroe has signed forward Kirby Lemons of Midland, Tex./Garden City CC, Kan. Forward Percy Green of Oklahoma City-Western Heights, Okla./Seminole State JC, Okla./Garden City CC, Kan., signed with Stephen F. Austin. He originally signed with TCU in Class 2000. Southeastern Louisiana has signed guard Amir Adbur-Rahim of Atlanta, Ga./Garden City CC, Kan. Forward Marcus Rosser of Philadelphia, Pa./Kansas City CC, Kan., signed with Montana. Early Period Rankings: Over 1000 student-athletes signed basketball scholarships during the Early Signing Period: Men/Women. The ACC and Pac-10 dominated the recruiting battle with DePaul and Florida leading the Class 2001 Preliminary Rankings, followed by North Carolina, UCLA, Arizona and North Carolina State. Other outstanding classes include Michigan State, Kansas, California, Missouri, Stanford, Georgia Tech and Memphis. Ninety-two Top 100 Prospects made their college choices. Pac-10 and ACC schools have 17, while the SEC has 14. While the three conferences have separated themselves from the rest of the recruiting pack, the Big Ten (11), Conference USA (10), Big East (9) and Big 12 (8) have done well. Top Football News: Michigan State has its second junior commitment in offensive lineman Kyle Cook of Macomb-Dakota, Mich. Junior receiver/defensive back Chris Choice of Greenbelt-Eleanor Roosevelt, Md., has committed to Maryland over early interest from Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina and East Carolina, among others. Kentucky has signed senior running back Ronald (Rock) Johnson of Cleveland-St. Peter Chanel, Ohio. Johnson also drew interest from Wisconsin, Indiana and Akron. Junior receiver/defensive back Calvin Lowry of Fayetteville-Douglas Byrd, N.C., picked Penn State over North Carolina State, Duke, North Carolina and East Carolina.
