Saturday, February 10 Updated: February 11, 2:34 PM ET ![]() Hobgood continues family tradition DAYTONA BEACH Justin Hobgood, whose father won the race eight years ago, led for 31 laps and hung on to take the Discount Auto Parts 200 on Saturday at Daytona International Speedway.
The 21-year-old driver from Winnsboro, S.C., whose father, Will, is his crew chief, beat polesitter and rookie Derrick Kelley by 1.87 seconds in the Goody's Dash series event.
"He was on the radio all the time, helping me out, telling me how to work the draft," the winner said of his father. "I was looking in the mirror 95 percent of the time on those last laps."
It was the first win in the event for Hobgood, 28th and 27th the last two years. His 25-year-old brother, Jake, who started sixth, wound up 32nd after developing an engine problem.
The winner, who started third, averaged 113.319 mph in a race slowed seven times by 31 laps of caution. There were six lead changes among six drivers.
Hobgood took the lead for the second and final time on the 58th of a scheduled 80 laps. An additional three laps were added to prevent the race from ending under caution.
The victory was the third for Hobgood in the series for subcompacts, but certainly the most satisfying.
"We were back in the shop trying to decide what color to paint the car, and I told him to do it the same way it was when he won in 1993," Hobgood said.
But the elder Hobgood insists he isn't retired at 50. He got out of the car to provide a ride for his youngest son.
"But I might be back if they move along," he said of Jake and Justin.
Third in the opening race of the NASCAR season was rookie Tim Nichols, followed by Scott Weaver and B.J. Mackey as Pontiacs took the first five spots.
Robert Huffman was sixth in a Toyota, the highest-finishing non-Pontiac. All but eight of the 42 cars were Pontiacs.
Eight drivers were transported to the infield care center from a rash of accidents, but there were no serious injuries. |
