Potashnick arrested late Thursday night
Associated Press

BUNNELL, Fla. -- NASCAR driver Samuel "Sammy" Potashnick is facing charges of illegally possessing prescription drugs and cocaine following what authorities say was a near head-on collision with a Flagler County sheriff's deputy.

Potashnick, second last year in NASCAR's Winston West series, was arrested early Thursday and released on $10,000 bail, authorities said Friday.

The 27-year-old driver from Sikeston, Mo., was driving on the wrong side of the road after 4:30 a.m. when a patrol car spotted him and had to swerve to avoid a crash, according to a sheriff's incident report.

The sheriff's deputy pulled Potashnick over and found crack cocaine hidden inside a pack of cigarettes in the car and four hydrocodone pills in Potashnick's pockets, the report states.

Potashnick told the deputy that he had an argument with his wife on the phone earlier and had been driving on the wrong side of the road because another car was following him. When asked if he had been drinking, Potashnick said he had taken six Vicodin pills, according to the report.

Potashnick allegedly told a deputy that he had bought crack cocaine from a man in a Daytona Beach bar, and that it was his first time buying the drug.

The deputy also cited Potashnick for driving the wrong way on a divided highway.

Officials from Lucas Oil Products Inc., which sponsors Potashnick's SP Racing team, declined to comment on the matter Friday.

A phone message left Potashnick's home was not immediately returned Friday.
