Jay Sauter
Close to cracking the top 10

Special to ESPN.com

We as a team have stated that one of our main goals this year was to develop consistency. Our 13th-place finish in Atlanta last weekend was certainly consistent with our last three races. We now have posted finishes of 11th, 10th and 13th in the last three events. This has moved us to 11th position in the overall Busch Series standings, just 13 points out of the top-10.

I would have liked to have gotten to the top-10 in Atlanta, but with the way the race developed, we were fairly pleased with 13th. At least we're getting decent finishes and developing that consistency we are striving for. We know that in the long run, the consistent finishes will pay off for us. Our next goal is to break into the top-five and get into Victory Lane.

Just as the finishes have been consistent the last three events, so has qualifying. We posted a speed of 186.786 mph Friday afternoon to earn the 26th-starting position. We have now qualified 25th, 29th and 26th in the last three races.

Our qualifying has not been indicative of our race setup. Our race package has been good for all four events thus far and continues to keep us competitive with the top-10.

The first 25 laps of the race would provide several anxious moments for the Quality Farm & Country team. As I worked my way through race traffic, I dodged two wrecks that took place ahead of me. Both eliminated several cars from the race. I was fortunate to stay out of trouble.

In the final stages of the race, I ran in a group of seven cars battling for positions 10 through 16. We came away with a 13th-place finish.

Saturday was an up-and-down day for our team. I had a decent car to start. The crew did a good job in the pits making adjustments to the car and Gene Nead made the right calls all day. Actually, I had a real good car at the end. We 'short pitted' on our last stop and that helped us. All in all, it was a pretty good afternoon.

Next, we head to Darlington Raceway. I had a good run going last spring at Darlington until I lost a cylinder late in the race. We didn't test Darlington last year, so I went into that first race 'cold turkey.' Whoever named Darlington the track "Too Tough To Tame" hit the nail on the head.

I'll have the same car I qualified ninth with last fall at Darlington. This year, we'll have a new tire and more horsepower than last year. Tire wear is always a big factor at Darlington and will be even more so this year with the increased horsepower and speed. How well you manage your tire wear could be the key this weekend.

Of course, Darlington is Darlington. You can have a good run going and this track just bite you without warning. I just want to keep up the string of strong runs that we've had so far this year. I believe that the entire Quality Farm & Country team is more confident going into Darlington this year.

Jay Sauter drives the No. 43 car in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division and will be submitting a weekly diary to ESPN.com throughout the season.
