Tuesday, March 27 Electrical problem sets Sauter back By Jay Sauter Special to ESPN.com At Bristol, you have to be in position at the end of the race to go for it, but if you're involved in one of the many accidents, your day can be over very quickly. Fortunately, for the Quality Farm & Country racing team, we were able to stay out of each of the 12 cautions. However, an electrical problem developed under the hood early on in the race and set us back 25 laps.
We had just completed the first pit stop of the race on lap 70 for four tires and fuel when I suddenly felt something wrong with the car. We were running in the 12th position at this stage of the race. I brought the car back in and Gene (Nead, crew chief) raised the hood to try and locate the trouble. He identified an inexplicable wiring problem. Unfortunately, we would lose valuable laps on the track. With the problem fixed, we returned to the race on lap 107. At this point, we had one of the fastest cars on the track; however, time spent in the pits put us 25 laps down and resulted in a 22nd-place finish. We did manage to pick up 10 positions after re-joining the race. Those 30 valuable points gained could be very important in the final Busch Series standings. It's really unfortunate that we had a problem. I had already missed about four or five wrecks and everything was looking good. We qualified well and I had a good car. I was just running a steady pace during the early stages of the race. Even after I got back on the track, I had one of the fastest cars running. However, at that point I was just trying to gain as many positions and points as I could. The Quality Farm & Country team now stands 16th in overall Busch Series points. We still have our sights fixed on the top-10. The next stop is Texas and I can't wait to get there. I really love that track; it is probably my favorite on the circuit. When you run well, you build confidence. And, I'm confident heading to Texas that I can run up front and have a shot at winning. I've always had good equipment at Texas, and I'm driving the same car that ran so well at Atlanta earlier this year. This could be a great weekend for our Quality Farm & Country team. Jay Sauter drives the No. 43 car in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division and will be submitting a weekly diary to ESPN.com throughout the season. |
