Saturday, April 14 Updated: April 17, 8:43 PM ET Rookie driver wins at 'rookie' track ESPN.com news services GLADEVILLE, Tenn. -- Greg Biffle raced to his first Busch Series victory Saturday, holding off Jason Keller in the Pepsi 300 at the new Nashville Superspeedway.
Biffle was making his eighth start since moving up from the Craftsman Truck Series for Roush Racing. Only Johnny Rumley, who won his seventh start in 1993, has won quicker in this series.
Keller finished second for his third top-five finish this season. Rookie Scott Wimmer was third, followed by Randy LaJoie and Elton Sawyer. Pole sitter Kevin Harvick was seventh as 10 drivers swapped the lead 15 times.
It's not surprising that Biffle won so quickly.
He won the truck series title last season and took over the Busch car that Mark Martin won five races with in 2000 before dropping the series from his schedule. Biffle's worst finish came at Bristol last month when he started out fifth only to come in 30th. In his seven previous starts, he finished in the top 10 four times, including second twice.
On Saturday, he started fourth and bided his time, leading five different times for a total of 133 laps on the 1.33-mile D-shaped tri-oval. Biffle said he felt like he had the strongest car in the field after outrunning points leader Kevin Harvick and defending champion Jeff Green during Happy Hour on Friday.
"I felt a little restless sleeping last night and actually really nervous because when you have a good car it's like my crew chief says, 'The only thing you can do is make a mistake or mess it up.' That's what we didn't want to do today was make a mistake. I'm thankful we didn't," he said.
Biffle took the lead for good on lap 187. Keller had been working all day to loosen up his Ford, and he said his crew got the car a little too loose during the 10th caution.
Going into Turn 4, Biffle worked his Ford underneath Keller and gave himself enough room to go by for the lead. Not even the 11th and final caution of the day could stop Biffle. He held off Keller on the restart and held on for the victory.
"He stuck his nose right up where he needed to. He didn't do anything wrong. He got me a little loose," said Keller, who came into Nashville second in the points race behind Harvick. "We ran tit for tat with him, but we didn't have anything to go up there and blast by him."
It wasn't a good day for everybody.
Only 14 cars finished all 225 laps, and 10 of the 11 cautions for 58 laps resulted from wrecks in Turns 1 and 2 on the new concrete surface. Most drivers stayed single file on the one groove worn into the track, and only once did anyone get three-wide and that lasted for only a few seconds.
Shawna Robinson didn't finish one lap in her second Busch race. Knocked out of the race two weeks ago at Texas by a wreck, she was involved in a wreck with A.J. Frank on the first turn.
"I must have magnets on both sides of my car," said Robinson, who finished third Friday in the ARCA/REMAX race.
