Tuesday, May 15 Early wreck results in poor finish By Jay Sauter Special to ESPN.com The New Hampshire International Speedway had been very good to me during my first four years of NASCAR competition. We won our first ever event in the Truck Series in 1997, and we have recorded three additional top-20 finishes since then at this track. However, this year's visit to Loudon will not a memorable one. An early-race accident resulted in a 32nd-place finish for the Quality Farm & Country team. We had high hopes entering the race coming off a solid top-10 last weekend. We qualified in the 22nd position with a speed of 127.812 mph, and our car was very strong during Happy Hour.
It didn't take long for the action to start. On Lap 3, rookie Clay Rogers (No. 17) got into the right side of the Quality Farm Stores Chevrolet as we exited Turn 2 side by side. The contact sent us both spinning down the backstretch. Rogers car hit the inside retaining wall and spun back toward the racing surface, hitting me a second time. The second contact nearly ripped off the entire rear third of the Quality Farm Stores car. I thought that I gave the No. 17 car room on the outside of Turn 2, but he got into my right side and sent me sliding. I would have been able to continue, but when he (Rogers) hit me the second time, that is when most of the heavy damage occurred. I was able to drive away from the accident to head back to the garage area for repairs. Crew chief Gene Nead and the Quality pit crew immediately went to work. The crew had to nearly rebuild the entire rear section of the car so that I could continue in the race, with the goal to gain as many additional positions as possible for the series point standings. On Lap 54, I drove the taped and welded together No. 43 machine back on the track. I was able to complete the race and post some competitive lap times, but we were too many laps down. It's a shame that I didn't get to show how good of a car I had. I was good in Happy Hour on Friday, and I felt like I had a car capable of getting to the front. However, it wouldn't be our day. We are now in the 15th position in the overall points race, but still well within reach of the top-10. The next race will be in Nazareth, Pa., on Sunday. We have done well in the past at Nazareth, posting four top-10 finishes in the last four races there. Nazareth is unlike anywhere else on the Busch circuit. With all the different turns and the tight corners, it's a tough track to drive, but it's a fun track at the same time. I've been fortunate to run good at Nazareth in both the trucks and Busch, so I'm excited about this weekend. Nazareth has seen its share of first time winners in its history and I'd like to add my name to that list. You either like Nazareth or hate it and I like it! Our primary sponsor, Quality Farm Stores, will be opening a new store in Quakertown, Pa., over the weekend, which is only about 25 miles from the track in Nazareth. I will be at the store Friday to meet with stores customers and race fans. I am looking forward to a fun weekend. Jay Sauter drives the No. 43 car in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division and will be submitting a weekly diary to ESPN.com throughout the season. |
