Sauter claims first pole at Kentucky

Our team will always remember the inaugural Busch race at Kentucky Speedway. I captured my first career NASCAR Busch Series pole and capped the weekend with a ninth-place finish, our fifth top-10 of the year.

After two practice sessions where we posted competitive speeds, we drew the No. 2 position for qualifying that was scheduled for Friday night. However, rain postponed qualifying until noon on Saturday.

We qualified with a fast lap time of 31.421 seconds and a speed of 171.860 mph. Then, we waited for over 40 cars to try to knock us off the pole. Finally, after waiting for over two hours, my lap time held on for our first career pole in the series.

We ran a good lap. Getting the draw early for Saturday was a big help while the track was still cool. I needed this real bad. This is a tough business. I came from the truck series, where we won poles and races. We haven't done that yet in the Busch Series. We felt we were going to get that done this year. This is a huge step in the right direction.

We competed in the top-five for the first 60 laps of the race. Our car was good, although it was a little loose coming off of the corners.

On lap 65, Gene (Nead, crew chief) radioed that Jason Keller (No. 57) had run out of gas and we ought to come in the next lap for routine service.

Then, on lap 66, the entire race took a turn for the Quality Farm Stores team.

While making our pit stop under green flag conditions, a driver spun in Turn 2 to bring out the caution flag. We were one of six top-15 cars who were caught in the pits and immediately went a lap down. We restarted the race as the first car one lap down in 21st position.

We got a break 10 laps later as another caution flag came out. We were able to beat the leaders back to the Start/Finish Line to get back on the lead lap.

By the midway point of the race on lap 100, our car was real good and we moved up to the ninth position.

We brought the Quality Farm Stores Chevrolet home in the ninth position.

We gained two positions in the overall standings and are now in 15th place.

For the next race, we head to my home state of Wisconsin to compete at the Milwaukee Mile on July 1 after a weekend off.

We will be testing at the new Chicagoland Speedway this week during their open test session. After that, I plan on heading up to see family in Wisconsin prior to the Milwaukee race.

Jay Sauter drives the No. 43 car in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division and will be submitting a weekly diary to ESPN.com throughout the season.
