CLERMONT, Ind. -- Kenny Wallace claimed his second straight pole, taking the top spot for Saturday night's NASCAR Busch Grand National Series Kroger 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Driving a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Wallace covered the .686-mile oval in 22.322 seconds, clocking 110.6352 miles per hour and barely edging Greg Biffle.

Wallace also won the pole for last week's NAPA AutoCare 250 at Pikes Peak International Raceway and finished sixth. He has yet to win this season.

Although no pole-sitter has taken a checkered flag this season, three of the last five winners here have come from the pole.

The short track is not conducive to passing and Friday's truck race had seven cautions that kept the top five drivers virtually unchanged over the last 100 laps.

Driving a Ford Taurus, Biffle ran a lap at 110.5461 mph as he just missed his third pole of the season. Nevertheless, the series rookie is in prime position to claim his fourth win of the season.

Biffle and Kevin Harvick lead the circuit with three wins each. Biffle is second in the overall standings with 3,025 points and trails Harvick by 163.

The second row is comprised of the Chevrolet of Jeff Purvis and the Ford of Elton Sawyer. Purvis was second to Ron Hornaday here last year and is coming off his first win since 1996 last week at Pikes Peak.

Jason Keller, who is 15 points behind Biffle in the standings and won the CVS Pharmacy 200 in May, qualified fifth in a Ford. He won here in 1995 and 1999.

Harvick, who has run nearly every Busch and Winston Cup race this year, will start 12th in a Monte Carlo. He captured the checkered flag at Carquest Auto Parts 250 outside Chicago two weeks ago.

Jeff Green, who is fourth in the points and also has won twice this year, qualified 16th in the Ford. He was third here last year.

Indianapolis Raceway Park hosted the first NASCAR race in the state in 1982.

The Kroger 200 covers 137.2 miles and has 43 cars gunning for posted awards of nearly $731,000. The 22nd of 33 races on the circuit will be televised live by TNT at 8 p.m. EDT.
