Check out a short list of favorites for Saturday's Cabela 250 at Michigan International Speedway:
David Green:
The 1994 Busch Series champion finished sixth in
the Kroger 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park on August 2, his
series-high 14th top-10 result; did not compete in this event
last year; still second in the standings, seven points behind
Scott Riggs; went winless since 1996 until April 12 at
Nashville; also won at Loudon on July 19; started from the
pole twice this year and has recorded eight top-fives.
Bobby Hamilton Jr.:
A result outside the top 25 at Indianapolis
proved costly in the championship race; now 302 points out of
first place in sixth; winner of two impressive races this year
at Chicagoland and Kentucky Speedway; in Chicago, led all but
14 of 200 laps to win a lopsided race by more than four seconds
over Matt Kenseth; placed in the top 10 in 12 races this season.
Ron Hornaday:
Finished in the first eight in six of the last
seven races; at Pikes Peak, led three different times for most
laps (80) before finishing seventh; fourth in the standings, 58
points out of first; owns five top-five finishes and 12 top-10s
this year; sole victory this season came in a solid performance
at Nazareth on May 18, when he led 148 of 200 laps; qualified
eighth here last year but not a factor in race (37th); two-time
Craftsman Truck series champion, also tops that circuit with 26
victories.
Jason Keller:
Runner-up finish at Indianapolis Raceway Park for
second straight year; also was second in a row after finishing
in same position at Pikes Peak; steadily climbed in rankings to
only 35 points behind Riggs in third place; has one win, a pole
and 12 top-10s; victory came at The Milwaukee Mile this year to
bring career total to 10; one of five drivers with 300 or more
career Busch Series starts, joining Tommy Houston, Elton Sawyer,
Randy LaJoie and Dale Jarrett; tops the all-time money list
with over $6.9 million; finished in the top three in points in
each of the past three seasons.
Scott Riggs:
Holds a seven-point lead over David Green entering
the 23rd race of season; has been at it with Green since June 7
at Nashville, a span of eight races, with Riggs in the points
lead five times and Green on three occasions; largest lead was
46 points, with the closest a mere two; was highest-finishing
rookie at the Cabela's 250 last year in sixth place; one of
three Busch Series regulars with two victories this season
(Green, Hamilton); won at Gateway and Nashville, giving him four
career titles in two years.
Johnny Sauter:
One of nine series drivers with double figures
in top-10 finishes, the second-year driver has 10; missed a
top-10 in last race at Indianapolis in 11th, but remained eighth
in points standings, a distant 362 behind Riggs; also has
finished among the first five in four races.
Brian Vickers:
Nineteen-year-old scored first career Busch
victory at the Kroger 200 in a side-by-side battle with
23-year-old Shane Hmiel over the last 30 laps; recorded top-10
finishes in eight of last nine races; is 99 points out of first
place in standings, one of four drivers with a shot at the
championship; owns seven top-five finishes and 13 top-10s this
season; other quality results were runners-up at Nazareth and
Milwaukee; World Karting Association national champion from
1994-97.
Scott Wimmer:
A seventh-place finish at this speedway after
starting 29th last year could make him a contender again this
season; led final 23 laps to win Pikes Peak race for first title
of the year and fifth career; finished no lower than 19th in
last 13 starts, including five top-10s; placed fifth at Loudon,
Richmond and Kentucky; remained seventh in the points standings.
