Check out a short list of favorites for Saturday's Target House 200 at Rockingham International Raceway:
David Green: Although the 16th-place finish at Phoenix last
week was not terrible, Green lost the top position in the
standings, sliding to fourth; heading into the penultimate
race of the year, trails leader Scott Riggs by 22 points;
qualified a strong second in this race last year and finished
fourth; earned over $1 million this year; winner of three
races this year and eight in his career; one of five regular
series drivers with double digits in top-five finishes (11);
triumph on April 12 at Nashville was first win since 1996;
started from the pole twice this year.
Bobby Hamilton Jr.: Victory at Phoenix was his second in the
last three races and series-leading fourth this year; picked up
10 bonus points for leading the most laps in a race shortened by
rain; chances at title are limited as he is 125 points out of
first place with two events left; scored 11 top-five finishes
and is tied with Brian Vickers for most top 10s with 20 in 32
races; other impressive victories came at Chicagoland and
Kentucky Speedway this year; also captured the pole at Pikes
Peak; led all but 14 of 200 laps to win a lopsided race in
Chicago by more than four seconds over Winston Cup regular
Matt Kenseth.
Ron Hornaday: Gained two positions to second place in the
championship race with a fifth-place finish at Phoenix; 17
points behind Riggs entering this race; result was eighth
top-five this year and 17th among the first 10 finishers;
the two-time NASCAR Southwest Tour (1992-93) and NASCAR Truck
series champion (1996, 1998), is one of four drivers with
realistic chances for the championship; only 22 points separate
the top-four to make it the closest NBS points battle with two
races to go in the history of the series; victory this year was
a dominant effort at Nazareth Speedway in Pennsylvania where he
led 148 of 200 laps; one other fine run was at Pikes Peak,
where he led three different times for the most laps (80)
before finishing seventh.
Jason Keller: Missed a top-10 finish at Phoenix in 11th place;
but is still in contention for the title, 60 points out of first
place; victory this year came at The Milwaukee Mile to give him
10 in his career; started from the pole twice and posted 17
top-10s; tops the all-time money list with over $7 million;
finished in the top-three in the standings in each of the past
three seasons.
Scott Riggs: Back in first place standings after six races
jockeying between second and fifth; holds 17-point lead over
Hornaday; sixth-place effort last week was 17th result among
the first 10 finishers; two victories this year came at Gateway
and Nashville, giving him four career titles; 18th as a rookie
at this event last year.
Brian Vickers: The 19-year-old was solid at Phoenix, finishing
third to stay in the title hunt over the final two races; picked
up two slots to third in standings, four points behind
second-place Hornaday and 21 behind Riggs; leading driver with
13 top-five finishes and 20 in the first 10; won races at
Indianapolis, Darlington and Dover; also was runner-up at
Nazareth and Milwaukee; World Karting Association national
champion from 1994-97.
