Saturday, November 16 Junqueira takes fourth pole ESPN.com news services MEXICO CITY -- Bruno Junqueira of Brazil retained the pole position in final qualifying Saturday for CART's season-ending Gran Premio Telmex-Gigante at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Driving a Toyota/Lola, Junqueira captured the provisional pole Friday with a final lap of 116.703 miles per hour around the revamped 2 3/4-mile facility. No one was able to better the mark Saturday.
Junqueira is second in the CART standings, already clinched by fellow Brazilian Cristiano da Matta. His two bonus points over the past two days put him five ahead of Canada's Patrick Carpentier for second place. "The car has been good and the Bridgestone tires are working fine here, no problem," Junqueira said. "I can go almost as fast on old tires as on new. I did my best lap today on the second run on a set of tires, so it's good." Brazil's Tony Kanaan qualified second at 116.091 mph in a Honda/Lola, followed by Kenny Brack of Sweden at 115.567 in a Toyota/Lola. The track was slick from overnight rain, keeping some times slow. However, more than half of the drivers were able to improve their speeds from Friday. Brazilian Christian Fittipaldi qualified second Friday at 116.587 mph in a Toyota/Lola but slipped to 13th on Saturday at 114.402. "Today's session was difficult for drivers to establish a rhythm because of all the red flags," Bridgestone project supervisor Joe Barbieri said. Dario Franchitti of Scotland dropped from third to fourth at 116.424 mph in a Honda/Lola. He also has a shot at second in the standings, which includes a $500,000 bonus. Franchitti trails Junqueira by just 12 points. Local favorite Mario Dominguez rounded out the top five qualifiers in a Ford-Cosworth/Lola. |
