Wednesday, March 27 Last chance to rest By Kenny Brack Special to ESPN.com
I returned from my vacation in Mexico at the end of last week and I feel re-energized about the rest of the season. After doing some testing this week, I feel even better about our upcoming race in Long Beach. We tried some new things on the Target car and it really has seemed to help out. We tested on Monday at Sebring, Fla., and turned some quick laps on the road course there. We used a street course setup to simulate running in Long Beach. We ended up running a total of 269 miles. Although we don't race in Sebring, it is an encouraging sign for us to be fast on a simulated street course. On Tuesday and Wednesday we tested at the Homestead, Fla., oval, turning almost 350 miles. It was the first time that we have tested the 2002 Lola package on the ovals and that test went very well also. Overall, we got a lot of work done over those three days. We didn't have any problems during our three days of testing, which is a credit to this team. They do an outstanding job of preparing these cars and that shows with all of miles that we turned in. We have come a long way with the setup on the cars. When we were in Monterrey, we were just a little off the pace. And when a few tenths of a second is what separates the fastest car from the slowest, it makes a big difference. I think that might have hit on a few things during the test to help us have a faster car when we hit the track on race weekend. I drove from Sebring to Homestead on Monday night. That four-hour drive was a good chance to clear my mind and think about the rest of the season. Although we didn't score any points in the first race, we still have a lot of races to go and there are going to be many opportunities to get wins and score points. I leave Thursday morning for Los Angeles for a Toyota Motorsports day and have a few other media opportunities before returning home to Sweden for a few days. This will be the last chance that I have to go home for a while and see my family and friends. After I return from Sweden and before we go out to Long Beach I will return to the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time since my victory in the 1999 Indianapolis 500. We are going to test the 2002 G Force/Chevrolet IRL car. I can't tell you how excited I am about getting back to the place of my greatest victory ever. I'm not sure what my emotions are going to be, but I'll let you know in my next installment. I have really missed the last two years of running the in the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing." Well, I have to get my suitcase packed for my trip to Los Angeles. I'll talk to you soon! Kenny Brack, the driver of the No. 12 Lola for Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, will be providing a diary to ESPN.com throughout the CART season. |
