Wednesday, May 1 Next stop: Indy By Kenny Brack Special to ESPN.com
I qualified fourth, two spots better than I did last year, and I had a strong car at the beginning of the race. I quickly moved up to second by the second lap. Although the car wasn't perfect, I felt we could work on it during the pit stops and make it better. But I started losing power during the race and eventually had to come into the pits and find out what was wrong. The Toyota guys checked out the engine and found out we had a turbo problem. We had to park the car and take another DNF. It's our second one of the season and hopefully one of the last. Certainly, it's frustrating to have a problem like we had Saturday but those things will happen throughout the course of a season. Luckily, we're only about 22 points out of the championship chase and we can make up those points pretty fast. We need to regroup and get focused now on Indy. One nice thing about the trip were the people over there. They are extremely friendly and helpful. I brought my video camera with me this weekend and shot some of the sights and sounds at the track. Hopefully, I can get some of it on a TV channel near you to give you a feeling of what is was like there. I flew back to Indy and I'm starting to prepare for the three weeks in Indianapolis. I have a pretty busy next few weeks. We start practice Sunday, May 5, and practice every day up until pole day on May 11. On Monday, May 13 we head up to the Milwaukee Mile for a one-day test. Then we're back out at the Speedway from the 15th of May until the 19th. It's going to be a real competitive race this year and I can't wait to put last weekend behind me and get out to the Speedway. For the fans, this is going to one of best Indianapolis 500s in a long time. A lot of the big names and teams are coming back to the race this year and it's good to see. I have missed being there over the last few years. Well, I need to head down to the shop now and check on the preparations for this weekend's activities down at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I'll talk to you next week from Indy! Kenny Brack, the driver of the No. 12 Lola for Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, is providing a diary to ESPN.com throughout the CART season. |
