Good car, so-so result

Hello everyone.

I just returned from our race in Milwaukee. My Team Target guys gave me a strong car for the weekend. In the morning practice Friday, we were the fastest car on the track as well as the second-fastest overall that day. We struggled a little bit Saturday with our qualifying setup. We qualified 14th, which was a disappointment for us. However, I felt we would have a good car for the race.

When the race started I wanted to stay out of trouble and slowly make my way to the front.

Passing on that track was almost impossible. With everyone running the same line, it created a lot of marbles (small pieces of rubber) on the high line. We made up a bunch of positions on pit stops and attrition during the race and by lap 121, we were leading. I felt we were now in a great position to win the race, because of the difficulty with passing other cars.

We led for 59 laps before we made another pit stop. As soon as I made my pit stop, the yellow flag came out -- now that was frustrating. We went from the lead of the race to the tail end of the lead lap. I know we had a fast car because I turned the fastest lap of the race. But I didn't have enough laps to get back to the front of the field. We finished eighth and earned some points, but it's hard not to think of how well we could have finished.

We'll take the points and move onto Laguna Seca, but our luck has to change for the better. We were taken out of the race on the first lap of the season in Monterrey, Mexico, and we had a turbo problem in Motegi, Japan. We had a victory or at least a second-place finish in Long Beach, Calif., but the bad luck gremlins caught us there as well.

This week we travel to beautiful Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, Calif. It's about an hour-and-a-half south of San Jose and minutes from Pebble Beach. The track is amazing. It has a huge elevation change and many different types of corners. We held our spring training out here in February and we learned a lot from that test. We should be pretty fast there this weekend.

Monterey also has a lot of great restaurants and tourist areas to visit. You can try a different type of food each night you're there. The Carmel area just south of Monterey has a rocky coastline where seals sun themselves on the rocks. It's one of my favorite stops on the schedule.

Scott Dixon joined Team Target this weekend at Milwaukee and he did a great job. He qualified fourth and finished sixth. That's a good showing for a new driver with a new team. He has proven he can be fast and win races and I think he'll do a great job with us this year. I just can't believe he's only 21 years old. He really has a bright future ahead of him.

It's great to back into the heart of our season. We are in a stretch of seven races in eight weeks and it feels good to get back into a groove. We really need to start having some good finishes in order to get back in the championship race. I'm going to head to the gym now, I need to keep in shape so I can keep up with my young teammates. I'll talk to you later!
