Wednesday, July 10 From roads to airport By Kenny Brack Special to ESPN.com
I hope that some of you had a chance to watch the Molson Indy Toronto on Sunday. That place really knows how to put on a race. The stands were packed and the weather was great. It also helped that I had my best result of the season. I finished second and if things went right, we could have won that race. We unloaded with a pretty good car and we were fastest in the first practice session. We qualified fourth and I felt pretty good about the race setup. My Team Target pit crew was great all day and we made up a few spots in the race during the pit stops. Before I knew it I was running second and had the job of trying to run down Cristiano da Matta. We had the car to do it, but I ran into lapped traffic and I wasn't able to track him down. It's really encouraging to know that we can run so well on the road and street courses. We've had fast cars all year and now we're starting to get the results that we expected from the beginning of the year. Everyone has worked really hard and we are starting to get a lot of confidence going into the middle of the season. This week we head to Cleveland, Ohio, for the Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland. The Cleveland track might be the most unusual of any track that we race on all year long. If you haven't seen it, the track is on an airport. That's right, we race on airport runways, which is pretty cool for a few reasons. First, it's a very wide track that allows for passing almost anywhere on the track. The corners are very wide and you might see four or five cars wide at the start of the race. Second, it's the only road course that we race on where the fans can see the whole track. Team Target has had a lot of success in Cleveland, and I've done pretty well there also. In my rookie year in 2000 I finished second, which was my best result that year. Last year I finished sixth after starting 18th, so it's a place that I'm really looking forward to racing on this year. Cleveland is also home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You probably know how much I enjoy music, so I'm looking forward visiting the "Rock Hall," as it's known in Cleveland. It will be neat to see all of the memorabilia from all of the Rock and Rollers from years past. Music is my second-favorite passion in the world (behind racing). It's hard to believe that it's the ninth race of the season already. We're almost halfway through the season already. If we can keep having good results, I feel that we can compete for the championship at the end of the year, but it's going to be a tough battle. After the race in Cleveland, I'm heading back to Sweden for a few days. We have a week off before we go to Vancouver, so it's a good time to get back and see the family and friends. I only get back there a couple of times a year, so I try to get back whenever I get a chance. Besides, it's not so cold this time of year. I have to get packed for my trip to Cleveland this weekend, so I'm going to sign off for now. Have a great weekend everyone and cheer for the No. 12 Target car on Sunday!
