Thursday, September 5 Ready for for a trip across the pond By Kenny Brack Special to ESPN.com
I just returned back home to Indianapolis after our weekend in Denver. We had a fast car all weekend long. We qualified the Target car in sixth and finished seventh, despite having a few problems during the race. I was hoping for a better finish, because we turned the fastest lap in the race. I started having brake problems in the middle to latter stages of the race and that hurt our finish a little bit. It occurred when the car was in traffic. We were concerned about engine and brake problems during the weekend because of the altitude in the Mile High City. It was definitely a challenge for the team to keep the engine and brakes cool enough to run 100 laps. But they stood up to the challenge. Because the air is much thinner up there, the car runs a lot hotter as it doesn't have enough air to cool it down. In the morning warm-up session before the race, I scraped the wall and hurt the right front of the car. Luckily, the team quickly fixed the suspension and I was able to keep my primary car for the race. It seemed like a long race, especially with the thin air and the brake problems that we had. It was good to see my teammates, Bruno Junqueira and Scott Dixon, finish 1-2 in the race ... I just wish that I could have joined them up there. I ended up seventh, and it was a positive to finish a race. We've had our share of problems and bad luck, and I hope they're out of the way for a while. Next week, we head across the pond to race in Rockingham, England. I'm looking forward to getting over there. Last year, I led 56 laps there and was leading on the last lap before Gil de Ferran passed me on the corner before the checkered flag. That track is unique and I enjoy racing there. I'm hoping to get back in the winner's circle next Saturday. This week, I'm heading back to Sweden for a few days before the race in England. It's a short trip from Stockholm to England, so it allows me to see my family for a couple of days before I get back in the cockpit. Our season is beginning to wind down. We've had a stretch of four races in a row over the last month. In Montreal two weeks ago, I was taken out of the race on the first lap by Paul Tracy and Alex Tagliani. I don't know when I've had a season like this, if ever. I can't recall a season where this much stuff has happened, where things have happened to us that we really can't control. Chicago was my fault, definitely. But all of the others, it's just bad, bad luck. I believe in my Team Target guys. They are a professional, dedicated group of people. My pit crew is the fastest in the business. There's no other group out there that I'd rather have change my tires and fuel the car. We're poised to have a strong finish to the season. We have five races left in the season and we're going to go out and try to win each and every one of them. I'm heading to the airport to catch my flight over to Sweden. Catch the race next Saturday at 8:30 a.m. ET. I'll talk to you next week! Kenny Kenny Brack, the driver of the No. 12 Lola for Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, is providing a diary to ESPN.com throughout the CART season. |
