2001 recap
The good: Qualified in the top-seven at four ovals, including both superspeedways, an area in which he's been criticized during recent years. Came home fifth at Michigan after leading closing laps.

  • Season highlight: Started fourth at Cleveland, stayed in lead pack all afternoon and wound up third -- giving owner Gerry Forsythe his only podium of the season.

The bad: Despite the experience of Herta and veteran engineer Lee Dykstra, this team had trouble getting to the finish.

  • Season lowlight: Qualified fifth at his favorite track, Laguna Seca, but car flunked tech inspection and Herta had to start last. Charged to 12th in race.

Key stat: Suffered nine DNFs in 20 starts.

    2002 outlook
What needs to be done: Forsythe closed the doors of his team and Herta hasn't been able to find anything for 2002 FedEx Championship. Has an outside shot at the second Sigma seat.

Prediction: This 31-year-old Californian will likely wind up in the American LeMans Series, driving for Don Panoz, who may bring Herta to the Indianapolis 500.
