2001 recap
The good: Won the pole at Chicago, qualified third at Long Beach and started in top-5 on three other occasions. Had four Top-five finishes, with a best of third at Japan.

  • Season highlight: Came at Chicago, where he captured the pole, led 51 laps and had a third place at worse before being foiled by bad luck on a late yellow that cost him a lap.

The bad: Just timing more than anything, as several strong showings were thwarted by pit stops at inopportune times.

  • Season lowlight: Crashed out on the first lap at Portland and missed Detroit altogether because of an accident in qualifying.

Key stat: Scored points in 14 of 19 starts.

    2002 outlook
What needs to be done: After being distracted and wooed by Target/Ganassi, Kanaan reluctantly accepted the fact his option had been picked up by Nunn so the 26-year-old Brazilian merely needs to re-focus.

Prediction: With no teammate in 2002, Kanaan will have Nunn's undivided attention, and expertise, and should make a run at the championship.
