2002 recap
The good: The season started off great for Fernandez with a pole in his homeland at Monterrey, Mexico. He followed that up with another pole at Milwaukee and a second-place finish. He also started second and finished fourth at Denver.

Season highlight: Although his car went off and eventually faded to 13th, Fernandez felt like the hero he is in Mexico by winning the pole and leading the first 14 laps in the season opener at Monterrey.

The bad: Fernandez missed three races due to injuries from two separate accidents.

Season lowlight: He suffered a broken back in a horrendous pileup coming down for the start of the weather-impaired race at Surfers Paradise, Australia.

Adrian Fernandez
Adrian Fernandez suffered injuries in a pair of wrecks in 2002, including this one in Australia.

Key stat: Fernandez qualified on the front row three times and the last row twice.

2003 outlook
This 37-year-old veteran took a licking in 2002 with two hard crashes at Vancouver and Australia, but will likely return for his 11th season of Champ car racing.

Prediction: The lone owner/driver in the CART paddock has told friends he's considering retirement so this will probably be his swan song.

Your take
