2002 recap
The good: After a few years of inconsistency, the 31-year-old Canadian blossomed into the racer everyone expected when he came out of brilliant Toyota Atlantic career. Two wins and three more podiums helped him finish third in the FedEx Championship.

  • Season highlight: Swept both Ohio races in Cleveland and Mid-Ohio, his first victories on road courses, and totally dominated Mid-Ohio -- starting on pole and leading all but three of the 92 laps.

The bad: Was KO'd five times by mechanical failures.

  • Season lowlight: After qualifying fourth in front of his hometown crowd at Montreal, dropped out with electrical problems after only 27 laps.

    Patrick Carpentier
With two wins and a third-place finish in the points, Patrick Carpentier put together a breakthrough season in 2002.

Key stat: The only driver in a Reynard chassis to finish in Top 10 in points.

    2003 outlook
Saved his ride at Player's/Forsythe and unseated Alex Tagliani with several excellent efforts, Carpentier really developed some maturity in 2002 that should carry over in 2003.

Prediction: Driving a Lola chassis and same powerplant as everyone else next season should give likeable Canuck a strong run at the championship.
