Career recap
This 26-year-old native of Mante, Mexico, spent the 2002 season competing in the Telefonica World Series where he scored four Top 10 finishes, including a season-best eighth at Valencia. In 2001 he was runner-up in the Formula Chrysler Euro Series on the strength of one victory and six podiums. From 1998-2000 he ran the Pan American Indy Lights series. Rookie of the year in F2 Copa Marlboro and also competed in Mexican F3 series. Started in go-karts in 1990.
Gonzalez appeared to be joining a Walker Racing team which campaigned a car for Tora Takagi in CART this past season. Though Takagi was strong at times in notching seven top-10 finishes, he ended the year just 15th in points after finishing 12th or worse in eight of the final 10 races.
2003 outlook
Initially struck a deal to run full season with Derrick Walker, giving CART at least four Mexicans on its full-time roster and another driver to pull fans in Monterrey and Mexico City. But now it appears he's currently negotiating for a different ride.
Gonzalez faces a steep learning curve but couldn't have picked a better year to be a rookie in Champ cars.
