SPARTA, Ky. -- Jack Sprague turned a lap at 167.115 mph
Friday to claim the pole for Saturday's Kroger 225 NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series race at Kentucky Speedway.
The pole was the fourth of the season and 17th overall for
Sprague, who has one victory this season and is third in the series
points standings behind Scott Riggs and Joe Ruttman.
Sprague, whose name has been tossed about as a possible Winston
Cup driver, finished second behind Greg Biffle in last year's
Kroger 225, the inaugural event on the 1.5-mile tri-oval in rural
Gallatin County.
"I'm going to stay in this truck as long as this truck is
running," said Sprague, who drives the No. 24 NetZero Platinum
Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. "I have a lot of fun doing
what I'm doing.
"I've got a great team here. I'm not going to take a Cup car
ride that I don't feel like I can eventually win races in just to
get more money."
By finishing fourth or higher, Sprague will become the series'
first $4 million winner. He was the first driver to reach $1
million, $2 million and $3 million.
Teammate Ricky Hendrick, who became the youngest driver to win a
series race last week at Kansas Speedway, took the outside spot on
the front row with a lap of 166.072 mph.
"We ran here before in the Busch (Series) race and struggled a
lot," Hendrick said. "But I think we found out a few things that
will really help us run well this weekend."
Hendrick, 21, the series' rookie points leader, is the son of
Winston Cup team owner Rick Hendrick.
Rounding out the top five in the 36-truck field were Riggs
(165.720); Ted Musgrave (165.700), who has a series-leading four
victories and is fourth in the points standings; and Ruttman
(165.532), who is seeking his third win of the season.
