RICHMOND, Va. -- Dennis Setzer will start from the
pole in Thursday night's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Kroger
200 at Richmond International Raceway.
Not known for his qualifying prowess, Setzer covered the
three-quarter mile D-shaped RIR surface in 22.248 seconds at
121.359 miles per hour Thursday afternoon, barely missing the
course record set by Ron Hornaday in 1997.
Driving a Chevrolet, Setzer nabbed his second pole of the season
and third of his career. He finished some three-tenths of a
second ahead of Jack Sprague, also in a Chevrolet, and some
sixth-hundredths of a second off Hornaday's pace.
"We're trying to gain some experience for next year so we can
get in that championship hunt next year," Setzer said. "I'm just
really impressed with how my guys got this thing ready to go."
Sprague will start on the front row for the ninth time this
year, including six of the last seven races, after posting a
time of 121.055 miles per hour.
"It's awfully slick out there, but I made it work," he said.
Scott Riggs, who is 13 points behind series leader Joe Ruttman,
will start third in a Dodge. Ruttman will start from the 10th
spot.
Five current NASCAR competitors have entered the Kroger 200.
Stacey Compton is ninth and will be joined by Ken Schrader
(15th), Bobby Hamilton (16th), Kurt Busch (17th) and Elliott
Sadler (19th).
Defending champion Rick Carelli will start 14th.
The race is the 19th of 24 events in the Truck Series and will
be televised by ESPN2 at 8 p.m. EDT.
