Top-10s are nice, but ...

"Sin City" USA was the most recent stop for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The bright lights and the sound of the slot machines mixed with the noise of 800-horsepower motors always makes for a good weekend. Vegas is one of the favorite stops on our schedule as I think more family members were moving around the garage than any other race this year.

The series took a one-year break from the speedway after a scheduling problem last year. We opened up for competition Friday with the race being run on a rare Sunday afternoon. It worked out good for the fans at the track and home because the Winston Cup race was rained out and we gave them their much-needed fix of racing Sunday.

NASCAR granted us a test day, which was helpful for the Morgan/Dollar Motorsports team considering we were testing two trucks. Early on in the year we tested at the speedway and ended up wrecking one of our new Silverados. This time we brought "Timmy," one of our most successful trucks, and "Butters," the newest in the Morgan/Dollar stable.

If you're wondering about the names, they're all named after animated South Park cartoon characters. It was something that started when Danny Gill joined as crew chief back in St. Louis.

The test day started out kind of slow for us, leaving us chasing a tight condition on both trucks. We were testing Butters the most because we were curious to see how the truck would react to changes. It ran very well for the first time out and was faster than Timmy most of the afternoon.

By the end of the session we had moved from 13th or 14th fastest to fourth. Timmy was the truck we chose for the race and kept Butters clean for use in Phoenix next weekend. Timmy was a proven truck, one we knew we could count on for the race, plus Danny felt Butters would be strong in Phoenix.

Saturday started much like Friday with the tight handling problems. Every driver in the garage was facing the same condition, leaving everyone looking for an answer. Danny tried several combinations of shocks and springs, and we eventually found a stable package that helped us qualify eighth.

Danny holds qualifying very important, it shows in the amount of poles he has in his career as a crew chief. We have secured two poles this year and qualified in the top-10 numerous times. Our average starting position is among the best I have ever had in my truck series career.

The stands had a good crowd as race time approached late Sunday afternoon. I was impressed with the number of people that turned out. Once the green flag dropped, the Acxiom/Computer Associates Chevrolet fell a couple of positions. I went from eighth place to 10th and then slowly worked back through the field settling in the top-10 for the first 50 laps.

On Lap 54 I pitted under green for four tires and fuel, the guys had a great stop picking up a position in the pits. After the stop I began a charge towards the front, moving into the top-five and later as high as second. The truck was turning lap times close to what we qualified at; it was the best the truck had driven all weekend long.

With 20 laps remaining while running fourth, Danny made the call to pit for right side tires during a late race caution flag. The move dropped us to ninth with several lapped trucks on the inside at the green flag. These lapped trucks never had anything for the leaders, but felt they needed to get up there and mix things up on every restart. The lapped trucks racing against the leaders was enough to slow me down on that last caution, blocking me in and making me lose the lead pack.

Joe Ruttman made a move and got by with only a handful of laps remaining dropping me to 10th, where we stayed until the checkered flag flew. At the end of the race we had developed a serious tight condition that was making it hard for me to power through the corners like I was able to do earlier in the day. After the race we learned the left front tire was about wore off, giving the truck little grip on the track. We took right side tires on the last stop and in the process ended up putting almost 100 laps on the lefts.

The good thing is we were able to score another top-10 finish and add some points on Terry Cook in the championship chase. We battled so hard at the beginning of the year to even finish in the top-15, but we worked hard and have been able to secure 14 top-10 finishes in the past 18 races.

However, now that we have tasted good runs, 10th place is no longer satisfying. I can honestly say this crew is better than that and we have shown what we can accomplish. I am proud of these guys and glad to see that at the end of the day when we finish 10th, they're shaking their heads trying to figure out how to finish better the next week. We'll keep working on it, the more we work the better we're going to get.
