Tuesday, October 30 Ending the Day Early By Dennis Setzer Special to ESPN.com Every once in a while, you're left peering out the little window of an ambulance watching them hook your truck up to a tow truck and haul what's left towards your space in the garage area. It is a sinking feeling as a driver, one that leaves you questioning your motions and what you could have done in an attempt to avoid the disaster. In my case Friday at Phoenix International Raceway, there was nothing I could do to help save the No. 46 Acxiom/Computer Associates Chevrolet. On Lap 105, while passing on the outside of the wrecked truck of Ricky Hendrick, the truck veered violently to the right, sending me hard into the Turn 1 wall. The verdict, a cut right front tire that left us shaking our heads at what could have been.
We started the race in the fourth position and settled comfortably into the top-five moving as high as third. Jack Sprague and Rick Crawford were the strongest trucks early on and as we battled further back in the field they were able to pull away to a pretty sizable lead. I was able to run lap times in comparison and on many occasions better than them, but was always too far behind to make a serious push. The Morgan/Dollar Motorsports entry was strong, Danny Gill and the boys had the drivability of the truck perfect and I was able to make a strong run on any portion of the track. Danny and I have worked very hard this season on making the chassis handle at each of the tracks. Danny has offered me some new changes and things to try I had never used in my career and they have helped our finishes tremendously. We pitted on Lap 60 for right side tires and gas and lost one position on the track, slipping back to fourth. Another caution flag quickly fell on Lap 72 and Danny made the call to pit for left sides and fuel, allowing us the ability to race to the checkered flag. We came out of the pits in sixth and on the restart got jumbled behind lapped traffic falling to seventh. I was able to work my way through the lapped traffic and back into the top-five by Lap 82. On Lap 105, while trying to pass Hendrick, the right front went down and the truck suddenly shot to the right. I slammed hard on the brakes and then released in an attempt to try and correct to the left, but there was going to be none of that. I braced myself and took the impact hard on the right side. The truck was damaged heavily and I got a ride to the infield care center in an ambulance. It's hard as a driver to watch such a great day be destroyed by something out of your control. I felt like we had a truck capable of winning the race or at least strong enough to finish in the top-five. You're so focused on driving hard and trying to stay in touch with the leaders that you don't think about situations like we encountered. As a driver you always have the thought of accidents and mechanical failures in the back of your mind, but that is where they remain. The Morgan/Dollar Motorsports team has worked hard throughout the 2001 season at building me strong equipment and keeping me at the front of these competitive NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series fields. We have taken a young Oklahoma-based team and finished very well, scoring a win and several poles. The challenges that face young teams have reared their heads, but this team has battled through that adversity and worked hard to make us contenders every week. The series now heads to California Speedway for the season finale Autoclub 200 on Saturday, Nov. 3. It has been a long season and I am hoping we score a good run in Fontana. The guys in the shop will have a long winter ahead of them, but the better we run in California the shorter we can make it for them. Dennis Setzer, driver of the No. 46 Acxiom/Computer Associates Chevrolet for Morgan/Dollar Motorsports in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, provides a diary to ESPN.com throughout the 2001 season. |
