Saturday, November 3 Musgrave wins seventh race of 2001 Associated Press
Musgrave had one of the fastest trucks throughout the 100-lap event at California Speedway. He started 12th in the 36-car field and worked his way to the lead for the first time on lap 42 on the 2-mile oval.
The former Winston Cup star fell to 14th on lap 59 while pitting his Dodge out of sequence with the other leaders. Musgrave then sliced through traffic and regained the top spot on lap 87, passing Rick Crawford's Ford.
The last of eight caution flags came out when Jerry Hill spun six laps from the end, but Musgrave pulled away from Crawford after the green flag waved with two laps remaining.
"I made a mistake in qualifying and we started pretty far back, but I knew we had a truck to win," Musgrave said. "We never got worried when we fell back after that pit stop. We knew we had our hands full, but I was determined to win this race."
Sprague, who previously won truck titles in 1997 and '99, needed only to start Saturday's race to break his tie with Ron Hornaday Jr. for the most series championships.
Sprague was running among the leaders on lap 27 when Scott Riggs dove low on the banked track to try to pass rookie Jon Wood, who appeared to bump Riggs, who skidded up the track and slammed Sprague into the wall.
The angry Sprague drove his battered truck slowly back to the pits and, when he found himself behind Riggs, ran into the rear of the other damaged car on pit road. After the two parked in the garage area, Sprague had to be restrained by series officials and crewmen from charging Riggs.
Wood, grandson of the famed Wood Brothers, was undamaged and finished a career-high third, followed by Dennis Setzer, David Starr and Terry Cook.
Travis Kvapil, who also clinched Rookie of the Year honors by starting the race, finished seventh.
The Hendrick Racing team worked on Sprague's damaged truck for most of the race and made it look almost like new by the time he drove back onto the track after the checkered flag to do a victory burnout in front of the flagstand.
Musgrave's second-place finish moved him from fourth to second place in the season standings, followed by Joe Ruttman, Kvapil and Riggs. |
